Tetrahydrothiophene (Gas Protection Expert)
I. Introduction to Tetrahydrothiophene Tetrahydrothiophene (THT), with the molecular formula C4H8S, is a cyclic sulfide organic compound. At room temperature, it is a colorless, transparent, oily liquid with a strong, unique, and stable pungent odor. Chemically mild and stable, it is not easily volatilized or decomposed, and is not easily adsorbed. It is currently the most widely used and recognized standard gas odorant in the global gas industry.
II. Working Principle of THT
  1. Olfactory Warning Core Principle: The human sense of smell is extremely sensitive to THT. Even at a concentration as low as 0.0001% in the air, ordinary people can clearly smell the odor.
Trace amounts of THT are quantitatively added to odorless natural gas or liquefied petroleum gas according to the gas regulations of various countries. The originally odorless gas will be given a fixed, identifiable odor. Once a leak occurs in a pipeline, valve, or storage tank, THT will diffuse with the gas, relying on its strong odor to quickly transmit the leak signal, providing 24/7 warning through the human sense of smell. 2. Long-lasting and Stable Retention Principle: Its chemical structure is stable, making it difficult to oxidize or decompose under normal temperature and pressure, resulting in extremely low loss during long-distance pipeline transportation. It has weak adsorption properties, preventing large-scale adsorption onto steel pipe walls and rubber seals, and flows uniformly with the gas throughout the process. Its combustion and explosion characteristics are compatible with natural gas, ensuring complete combustion under normal conditions. It does not produce large amounts of corrosive impurities under normal operating conditions and does not clog pipelines, instruments, or pressure regulating equipment.
  1. Long-lasting Leak Detection Principle: THT has a long odor retention time and wide diffusion range. After a leak, the odor can adhere to the area around the leak for a long time. Maintenance personnel can trace the source of the odor to quickly locate minor damage points, compensating for blind spots in precision detection instruments. III. Industry Importance of Tetrahydrothiophene: A Globally Mandatory Standard, a Safety Essential: Gas regulations in most countries, including China, the EU, and North America, mandate the addition of odorants to piped gas. THT, with its comprehensive advantages, has become the preferred raw material for national gas standards in various countries and is a mandatory component of gas safety systems. Without odorants such as THT, residential and industrial piped gas supply is not permitted.
Overall performance far surpasses traditional odorants like ethanethiol.
Ethyl mercaptan has a strong odor but is highly volatile and easily absorbed by pipe walls, resulting in significant attenuation over long distances. THT, on the other hand, has a persistent odor with minimal loss, offering unparalleled stability in long-distance pipelines, making it suitable for gas transportation over hundreds or even thousands of kilometers.
Strong equipment compatibility and lower maintenance costs.
THT will not corrode carbon steel or stainless steel pipes, sealing rings, gas flow meters, or pressure regulating valves. Long-term use will not cause pipeline aging or instrument malfunctions, significantly reducing the later maintenance and replacement costs for gas companies.
Convenient storage and refueling, compatible with automated equipment. With a low freezing point, it does not easily solidify or crystallize in low-temperature environments. Refueling in winter in frigid regions will not clog the odorization skid or pump. It is compatible with fully automated intelligent odorization equipment, ensuring precise and controllable refueling metering.
Safe and controllable, with a high accident tolerance rate. It is not prone to spontaneous combustion and has a high explosion threshold, resulting in lower risks during storage, transportation, and refueling. Compared to other odorants, it offers a higher safety factor for storage and transportation.
IV. Mainstream Application Scenarios (I) Gas Industry (Core Use, Accounting for Over 90% of Usage)
Urban Municipal Natural Gas Pipelines
Urban household gas networks, regional gas distribution stations, long-distance inter-provincial gas transmission trunk lines. Domestic urban gas companies primarily use THT for odorization.
LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas)
Liquefied gas storage tanks, LPG tank trucks, centralized LPG supply systems for industrial and commercial use, centralized LPG regasification stations in residential communities.
LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) Terminals
LNG receiving terminals, regasification stations, LNG transport pipelines. THT is stable under low-temperature conditions and is a dedicated odorization feedstock for LNG.
Coal Mine Gas, Industrial Mine Gas
Underground gas extraction and utilization. THT is added to provide early warning of gas leaks and prevent mine explosions.
(II) Fine Chemical Industry
Pharmaceutical intermediates, pesticide synthesis raw materials, used as organic synthesis sulfurizing agents;
Lithium battery, electronic chemical raw materials, used in the modification and processing of special resins and rubber. (III) Special Industrial Leak Detection: Traceable leak detectors for sealed industrial pipelines, pressure vessels, and refrigeration pipes; leak marking for associated gas and shale gas extraction and transmission pipelines.
(IV) Foreign Trade and Overseas Markets: Gas projects in the Middle East, Central Asia, Southeast Asia, and Eastern Europe commonly procure industrial-grade THT for standardized local gas refueling.
Tetrahydrothiophene, relying on its stable physicochemical properties and extremely strong olfactory warning effect, along with its low loss, strong adaptability, and high safety, has become a mainstream core raw material for odorization in the global gas industry. With odor warning as its core operating logic, it is widely used in various gas transmission systems and the fine chemical industry, and is an indispensable key chemical for civilian safety and stable industrial production.
